Software and Website Localization
Localization is the process of translating Web sites or computer software for specific international markets. For instance, the version of Windows 2000 ® that ships in the USA is not the same as the one that ships in England or China. Product localization includes the translation of the user interface, resizing of dialog boxes to fix layout differences, the re-evaluation of graphics and content to fit the local culture, and thorough testing of the the final product to insure top quality. Often, localization is the key ingredient in assuring a successful product launch in a foreign market.
Software localization services go beyond traditional translation services. It requires a strong cooperation among the developers and the translators and the users. The objective is to adapt the user interface for a new environment while keeping the source code as it is.
The localization process has five phases:
- Evaluation and building of a terminology database
- Translation of the user interface, the help and all messages
- Adaptation of the user interface to local culture
- Testing and validation
- Translation of the Website
A successful localized product is a product that works as if it were developed in the country for which it is intended.
